Valentine’s Day traditions at Westhill

Students at Westhill find themselves split between elation and nervousness in regards to the popular February holiday. Here are a few traditions embraced by the Westhill student body on Valentine's Day.

Valentine’s Day: you either love it or hate it. Despite the popular holiday falling on a weekend this year, Westhill’s Valentine-themed activities will still be in full effect. Around school, you can see various flyers advertising the rose sales that will be hosted this Valentine’s Day.  You simply order a rose for $3 each and send it to the person of your choice. Whether it be a friend or significant other, it’s an inexpensive way to show your affection. There will also be a cupcake sale going on this week, with prices ranging from $1 to $1.50. Both sales are being held near the Finch cafeteria until Friday.

For couples at Westhill, many have said that they plan on spending a lazy day with their significant other and not worrying about any extravagant dinners and gifts. For most, Valentine’s Day is just another day of being in a relationship. For junior Gabriela Diaz, she said Valentine’s Day “is just an excuse to spend all day with my boyfriend.”

For others, Valentine’s Day is a day to go all out and express your affection with gifts. It’s never a surprise when you see someone holding a huge stuffed animal or a big box of chocolates on your way to class. Every now and then you might even see someone carrying balloons down the hallway. “It’s refreshing to see that people still care enough to buy gifts for each other,” said sophomore Lesly Pineda. And here at Westhill, we see plenty of that.

While Westhill is all for celebrating Valentine’s Day in school, a lot of people prefer to do so outside of school. Couples find it more romantic to go out to eat or see a movie, and those who are single are definitely not complaining. The single side of Valentine’s Day may not be as fun, but that’s not to say it’s a completely uninteresting. Friends can be seen exchanging gifts and candy throughout the day just as much as couples, if not more. Sophomore Leah Blank said she’ll be spending the day, “watching RomComs with her sister and eating chocolate.”

However you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day is completely up to you. You can spend your day cuddled up to your significant other or pigging out by yourself with the company of Netflix. Either way, you shouldn’t have too many expectations for just another day in the month of February.
