The Donut War

By: Julia Marchetti

When thinking about where to buy donuts, people in Stamford most likely think about Dunkin Donuts and Donut Delight, two of the most popular donuts/coffee shops. Besides Krispy Kreme and some other family owned donut shops, Dunkin’ and Donut Delight have been the two places where I mainly get donuts.

For this article, I was assigned to taste and compare donuts from three locations: Dunkin, Donut Delight, and So Fresh Donuts. So Fresh Donuts, which opened in September 2022, serves bite sized donuts. All of them are the same flavor, but you can pick which toppings you put on top. For example, when I went, I bought the 12 for $12 pack and picked the flavors glazed pumpkin, cerealously cinnamon, oreo crush, and trixie (twix flavored).

Accompanying me on this journey was Mia Nocera (‘23) and she got the Valentine’s Pack, which essentially was chocolate and vanilla frosted with different valentine sprinkles, and cinna razz (cinnamon and raspberry jam). Mia and I were not expecting the donuts to be bite sized, so when we walked in we were quite confused as to why there weren’t any displayed. It’s hard to compare So Fresh to Dunkin and Donut Delight because So Fresh is so different compared to the other two. There is more variety and the sizes are completely different, making comparison difficult.

In the end, it came down to the taste for me. I enjoyed the bite sized donuts and the variety of flavors, but I would much rather a Donut Delight donut over Dunkin and So Fresh. It’s not like I’ll never go back to So Fresh. The name, the decorated shop, and the amazing customer service alone would automatically make me return to get more.

A few days before going to So Fresh, I walked around Westhill and asked different teachers if they have ever heard of So Fresh and if they liked So Fresh (if they’ve been), Donut Delight, or Dunkin’s donuts more. Every teacher I asked had never heard of So Fresh, but the following teachers preferred Dunkin: Mr. Mcfillin and Mrs. Grant. The following teachers preferred Donut Delight: Mr. DiGiovanna, Ms. Cahill, Mr. Von Wahlde, and Ms. English.

After tasting the donuts, Mia and I had quite a few remaining, so we decided to go back to the teachers we had asked about the donuts to see if they wanted to try So Fresh and if their opinion changed. The two teachers who tried the donuts, Mr. DiGiovanna and Ms. Cahill both agreed that Donut Delight had the best tasting donuts, but  Mr. DiGiovanna said “So Fresh is homemade, the flavor profile is more complex.” We also gave one to Mr. Ocampo who said the mini donuts were “better than munchkins”.

Overall, I really enjoyed trying So Fresh and I would 100% recommend them to anyone who wants to try different donut flavors or to anyone who needs some sort of dessert for a party. Although the bite sized donuts are a cute and fun idea, I definitely still prefer the larger donuts from Donut Delight.
