As the winter season proceeds at Westhill, there is only one thing on our athletes’ minds, and that is basketball season. Both the boys’ and the girls’ teams have started their games already and have been impressing us with their standings. Our fans have been amazing so far this year and are all very eager to support both teams throughout the entire season.
Captain Jack Schlactenhaufen has been playing basketball since he was about five years old.
“I love the team aspect and the friendships that are formed. The reason I have continued to play the game is simply that I love basketball,” Schlactenhaufen said.
These were very comforting things to hear from one of our captains and one of the most committed players we have here at Westhill. Schlactenhaufen mentioned that the season has been going very well so far and the team is showing a lot of improvement over the past years. He has been committed to our team for four years and is currently out with an injury, but he explained that “being injured has strengthened my leadership as I help the team from the sidelines.”
The boys have currently won games against Bethel, Newtown, and Bridgeport Central.
The girls’ team has struggled a little bit so far this season, with only three winning games against Bridgeport Central, Immaculate, and Trinity Catholic.
Caroline Kollar is one of the captains for the girls. She has been committed to the team for three years, although she has been playing the sport for eight years.
“What I love most is the competitiveness of the sport and the opportunity I have to work with teammates to achieve a common goal. I play because I love the sport and the memories I make playing it with friends,” Kollar said.
Kollar has had a big role this season along with the other captains due to the transition the team has to make because of the new coach. She mentions that the upperclassmen on the team are working to build a foundation for the players that will be playing in the future. The entire team is looking forward to future games and plans to use their improved teamwork and motivation to hopefully defeat the other team.
