Since the earthquake in Haiti struck about three weeks ago, unfortunately, people may inadvertently lose sight of those in need because the earthquake is no longer the headlining story in the media. This earthquake in particular was an extremely devastating tragedy and thus must remain in the forefront of our minds. Haitian citizens are still being pulled from the rubble and desperately require medical attention and supplies.

Here at Westhill, students are working hard to ensure that our community does not lose sight of the goal to help Haiti. English teachers Mr. Wooley and Mr. Celcis supervise “Enter the Cypher,” an open-mic and showcase event that occurs every month. On January 29, “Enter the Cypher” was held in the small auditorium and had a recommended donation of $5 for admission, as the show is normally free, to donate to the relief efforts in Haiti.

“Enter the Cypher” is spearheaded by the Young Men’s Council. “This event helps people show their talent, and all of the money we raise goes to Haiti,” said club president, senior Andres Parrado. “We want to have a positive influence on the Westhill community, especially because the Haitian population is so [large] at our school,” he said.

“["Enter the Cypher"] is primarily a hip-hop event with an open mic, but other genres are encouraged,” said Young Men’s Council co-adviser Mr. Celcis. “We spread the word and those who show up, show up. We hold the event no matter the turnout. The key for us is to do the right thing. We want to provide students with the opportunity to help those affected,” he said.

Along with the Young Men’s Council, the Haitian Club, which promotes Haitian heritage and now the recent disaster relief, helped to organize this “Enter the Cypher” event. Haitian Club president, senior Agnus Zephir said, “We cannot go to Haiti, so our only chance of helping is to send whatever we can from here. We are trying to help people we love and may have lost over there,” she said.

Although there is not another benefit show currently scheduled, the Young Men’s Council and the Haitian Club are still accepting monetary donations.

The next “Enter the Cypher” is now planned for Friday, March 26, so mark your calendar.
