Over the past six months, a certain video game has risen in popularity so much so that even mega-star Drake and rapper Travis Scott are raving about it. Fortnite blends survival and exploration. The overall objective of the game is to be the last player standing. The game is similar to the movie The Hunger Games, where competitors have to collect materials/resources and kill their “peers” in order to survive.
One of the many reasons why Fortnite has become such a huge hit is because there is no cost. It is completely free to play. Nearly all video games are between $30-$60. However, Fortnite is a free-to-play game, with the only costs being additional in-game items that are optional to the players, such as battle passes. The game also allows you to play with up to 3 of your friends. Various skills are needed to win, and teamwork goes a long way when working with friends. Strategy also goes a long way in the game, such as the players landing spot and where the storm circle is.
“You can play with whoever you want. There is a lot of strategy and are many options for which style to play,” said Hudson Price (‘18). The creators of Fortnite, Epic Games, also play a huge part in keeping the game updated and successful by adding new items and fixing problems within the game. This keeps the game relatively fresh and fun for players. “It’s an awesome, kid-friendly game where you can play with your friends, said Stanley Villard (’18), another avid player.
As Fortnite continues to become more popular, more game modes will likely be released. This week Fortnite Mobile took to the app store. More game modes are rumored to be released in the coming weeks.
